Some Research on Meditation and Cognitive Performance

One study published in the Journal of Psychological Science demonstrates whether a two week mindfulness training course would decrease mind wandering and improve cognitive performance. This study examines how meditation can prove beneficial for students when it comes time to focus and execute.

Students who undertook regular meditation exercises in assigned training sessions throughout the two week study showed great overall improvement on their Graduate Record Examination results–specifically regarding reading-comprehension scores.

The mindfulness class also showed a huge improvement in the average GRE verbal score (from 460 to 520 two weeks later).

Working memory and focus was also measured before and after the two week period. The students who meditated were less prone to distraction and were able to demonstrate a more fluent retention of information.

The control group who tried to improve their performance by improving their nutrition failed to see the same results. This would indicate that the power of meditation within this short period of time shows far greater improvement than the effects of eating healthier.

Not to dismiss the fact that maintaining a clean diet will also have a positive impact when it comes to mental clarity; this simply illuminates the stunning benefits that meditation can produce in such a short period of time.

A different study performed in 2012 showed that meditation can greatly improve the ability to allocate one’s attention to a particular task. This was demonstrated by examining a group of well-trained Buddhist monks in comparison with a control group of students with no mediation experience.

In various tests, the seasoned meditators seemed to display an extremely enhanced ability to focus on one thing at a time while processing in depth information at a fascinating rate.

Meditation is a practice and a skill. When the mind wanders, meditation trains us to bring it back over and over again until our awareness gets flexed like a muscle and we eventually gain more control over where our attention is being placed.

Enhanced Focus and Reduced Stress

There are many testimonials of students who–often driven by their own curiosity–decided to include meditation as a regular part of their routine.

Such students would commonly testify that an average of 20 minutes of meditation per day can, for instance, make reading seem much less of a strenuous task than normal–compared to the average mind that is easily carried away from the task at hand.

Many consistent meditators also report that their ability to retain large amounts of information without much mental strain seems to dramatically improve, especially directly after a meditation session. For the student, this would imply less revisions and time well spent during the study session.

As meditation is so well-known to reduce fear and anxiety, this also comes with a decrease in stress often associated with exam time–allowing the student to remain on point and in flow as opposed to wasting energy contemplating and avoiding even the minor tasks.

A clear mind makes most challenges more enjoyable and inspiring because the fear center of the brain becomes less of a factor.

Both scientific and anecdotal evidence proves that meditation is a fantastic tool to use in preparing for exams or learning new skills. The amount of mental clarity and natural stability experienced through meditation is hard to find  through many other methods.
